Wednesday
Got this drawing from the 8 yo boy I sponsor through Save the
Children. I always write to the program in Kentucky and ask why
all of the drawings he sends me of himself show him as a non
African American. I never get a reply.
Too hot to go out today---the heat factor is over 100º and seniors
were advised to stay indoors. Since I don't drive, I thought my
usual walking, even to the busstop, inadvisible. So I stayed in
and watched the DVD "Black Girl (Borom Sarret)" written and
directed by Ousmane Sembene. It is considered one of the
seminal works of African cinema. It was beautifully constructed
and acted. I'll invite some people over to enjoy it before returning
it.

Not a soccer mom
Today's smiles
Tuesday
HHH. HF 97º. PHEW! Walking to catch the bus to the foot doctor
when I noticed the mail truck approaching. So I stepped into the
road and waved my envelopes. The truck passed me, then stopped
and reversed. The driver said he didn't know whether I was waving
at him to take or my mail or was fanning myself because of the heat.
Looked out of the bus window and saw Irene stretched out in her yard
on a green plastic chair sunning herself and smiling.
Feet in the whirlpool, then doctor cut my tonails and gave
me a foot massage. Walking on sunshine.
While struggling home uphill in this heat carrying two bags, I
noticed that someone had put a pinwheel sidewalkside. It would,
of course, rotate when the slight heated breeze blew. Thanks
for the smile.

The Survivor Walk
On Friday, June 22 and Saturday June 23, I participated in the Relay for Life-Roxborough. My team, Coyle's Cafe raised the second largest contribution and I raised the second largest as an individual.
walkers
After the 6pm intros on Friday evening, the
24 teams lined up and walked the track. (Each
team a member walking in rotationsince
noon.)
Saturday morning totals
So far, as of noon on Saturday 6/23, our team finished 2nd; but the
totals won't be final until 8/31.
Washa washa washa
My computer's acting weird and so, I haven't been able to post to my
blog from flickr. Now, 6/26,I'm in the library putting up some posts.
Thursday 6/21
Finally got all summer clothes organized! Washed three loads in
my small apartment sized washer. (I send most of my stuff out to
wewashit.com) Dried them in my small dryer. I'll have to iron most
them because they're linen. Oh how I hate work!

Girls' High Class 0f 2/57
So hazy, hot and humid again today that I decided to stay inside. While uploading black+
white pictures to a new group I've joined and scanning pictures from a 1982 trip to Senegal,
I handwashed some shorts, sorted clothes to was tomorrow and put away the last of the
winter clothing.
My high school class from Philadelphia High School for Girls recently had our 50th
reunion. This 50 year old pictureI took at a school outdoor event shows the diversity and
joy of our class. Girls' High was a great place, but that was 50 years ago.

What is it?
Any idea if this stands for anything? Someone put the 2 stones
and the stick arrangements on the step on Saturday. It's been
there untouched (?) even though people go in and out regularly.
Hope it's a good luck talisman.
HHH 90+º today. By the time I had walked to the gym, I'd already
had a workout!!

washers.game2
At the clubhouse sitting at the pool. Sunny and warm. Guys
playing washer game. People playing volleyball on sand and
in the water. Eating a delicious Chicken Caesar wrap and drinking
a Yeungling.
Reading "The Year in Hate" an intelligence report from the
Southern Poverty Law Center. The pleasant surroundings help
me to bear the fear for our people and our country as I read
about the 40% hate group increase since 2000.

Beauty's on duty
I had to stop at the mailbox on the way to the gym so I entered
the clubhouse by the pool entrance. Betsy was on duty as usual.
Betsy
You are supposed to show your card and sign in. A guest is $7,
$5 for senior or child guest. Betsy is friendly but relentless about
the rules being followed so I won't sign in or show my card just to
drive her mad. It still works after all these years :)
Had a good workout and then went home and sat reading on the
balcony while listening to the Oldies station. We might go out
tonight. Might not.

Cracker Rockers
Went to lunch @ Cracker Barrel with Peg from my EE tape train.
No one was sittin' out rockin' cause it was too cold and windy.
That food is *fabulous*--not healthy but tasty. I had chicken fried
steak, mac& cheese, turnip greens, sweet potato puree and
biscuits. Phew! All that for only $8.99. Bought some lye soap in
the country store. That was my first time there but certainly not
my last!
Flag Day tee
(in the country store @ CrackerBarrel)
In 1999, I'd taken my class to the Betsy Ross House on Flag Day
for the festivities. Afterwards we walked over to Independence Mall
to sit around and eat our lunch. Comstock had a *gigantic* cake on
display. The children agreed to circulate among the tourists and
distribute Cool Whip coupons. As a consequence, we all got
these great t-shirts for free!

Walking to the corner to catch the bus, I see
the guys from the company that has been
working in the neighborhood for a few weeks
beautifying the CVS property. I didn't want
them to think I was with La Migra so I only took
a picture when they weren't looking.
When I returned from the hair salon and
errands 3 hours later, they were still hard
at it! and had planted another row of plants.
I always marvel at their efforts. I always
greet them in Spanish and English, but they
never answer

" They call it stormy Moday, but Tuesday's just as bad
They call it stormy Moday, but Tuesday's just as bad
Wednesday's worse, and Thursday's also sad"
I love to hear T Bone Walker sing this!
We had a terrible thunderstorm yesterday
and again today. Hail too. But I was out walking
and enjoying it until the lightning got too
frequent. So I went into the library and read
magazines.

Ultraviolet
Never painted my nails this color before. Kinda like it. Ever try to
scan your hand? It's not easy. I should have taken a picture. DUH!
Lovely 80º day today. Worked out with Sue in the gym and then sat
by the pool playing Scrabble. Going out tonight to play cards--
double deck Pinochle. My partner is fierce so we should do well.

Fiesta Fundraiser
I sat at the entrance to the bar @ the clubhouse for two hours and collected $5 from each
person and gave them a wristband which entitled them to free food and drinks. My team,
Coyles Café was raising money for the Relay for Life.
(I've got to get a L tee instead of an XL this year.)
Dancin' team
Our team in the Relay for Life gave a fund-
raiser @ the clubhouse last night, We made
about $1500 from $5 admissions and raffles.
After we'd completed our chores, we joined in
with the crowd and *danced* for hours!

Ujima on fiesta flyer
HHH today. The HF has reached 100º. Went to the salon and had
my nails painted violet to blend with the purple that is the color of
the Relay for Life rather than the pink that is the color of most cancer
events. Worked out with Sue in the gym. I've finally fallen in love
with the machines :)
Will rest now and read the newspapers. I'll go to the club after six and help
set up for tonight's fiesta. I know we'll raise a lot of cash for our effort.

Stand against childhood cancer
alexslemonade.org
There were stands set up all over the city today. This one was @
the bus stop home near the farmers' market. I'm wearing my
Pickle Power shirt from 2000 when our Eagles drank pickle juice
to fight against heat cramps when they were playing the stinkin'
Cowboys down in Dallas.
I have to skip the planning meeting for tomorrow because Mom was
having a bad reaction to her new pain med and I won't leave her
alone even though she's doing better now.
