I love the lights in Liquid, the bar in Trump Plaza where we stayed. The bar's fun and has good bands. You can sit outside on the porch and watch the Boardwalk traffic if you wish.

firetruck!

firetruck!, originally uploaded by ujima.

July 19 Joseph Lee’s birth in 1849 is celebrated on this date. He was an African-American who invented machinery for processing food and became very prominent in the food industry. He decided that instead of simply throwing stale bread away, he would use it to make breadcrumbs. He thus set out to invent a device that could mechanize tearing, crumbling, and grinding bread into crumbs. He was finally successful and patented the invention on June 4,1895.

After I cam home from Relish, I was lying on the couch resting. Heard lots of sirens. Finally got up and looked out of kitchen window to see firetrucks, ambulances, etc. There was a fire in an apartment down the way; but as they didn't stay long and no one was carried out in the ambulance, I surmised everything was OK.
Got to make time to volunteer for 67 minutes in honor of Mandela's birthday (although I'm disturbed by his support of Jacob Zuma).

July 14 Earl Francis was born on this date in 1935. He was an African-American baseball player and businessman.
He was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ opening day starter in 1963 and a rookie pitcher on their 1960 World Series championship team. Francis was 16-23 with a 3.77 ERA in 52 games and six major league seasons, all but one with the Pirates.

Going poolside later to watch All Star Game. President Obama'd better throw out a good first pitch or they'll be all over him for that too.

Beautiful people

July 11 This date marks the founding of the Niagara Movement, the first significant black organized protest movement of the 20th century in America. It also represented the attempt of a small yet articulate group of radicals to challenge the then dominant ideals of Booker T. Washington. At the turn of the century there were divisions in African-American political life: those who believed in accommodation, led by Booker T. Washington; and the more militant group, led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William M. Trotter. aaregistry.com/detail.php?id=1005

The Ridge mural, originally uploaded by ujima.

July 9 On this date in 1893, the first successful American open-heart surgery was performed by a Black surgeon, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams.Dr. Daniel Williams completed the operation on a young man named James Cornish. He had been rushed to Provident Hospital in Chicago--a hospital which Dr. Williams had founded and one of the few hospitals that welcomed African Americans--with a stab wound. Williams repaired the wound with the use of sutures.

The Mural Arts have finished the mural for Roxborough/Manayunk. You see the turtle indigenous to this area. Names of our streets are on his shell.
