firetruck!

firetruck!, originally uploaded by ujima.

July 19 Joseph Lee’s birth in 1849 is celebrated on this date. He was an African-American who invented machinery for processing food and became very prominent in the food industry. He decided that instead of simply throwing stale bread away, he would use it to make breadcrumbs. He thus set out to invent a device that could mechanize tearing, crumbling, and grinding bread into crumbs. He was finally successful and patented the invention on June 4,1895.

After I cam home from Relish, I was lying on the couch resting. Heard lots of sirens. Finally got up and looked out of kitchen window to see firetrucks, ambulances, etc. There was a fire in an apartment down the way; but as they didn't stay long and no one was carried out in the ambulance, I surmised everything was OK.
Got to make time to volunteer for 67 minutes in honor of Mandela's birthday (although I'm disturbed by his support of Jacob Zuma).
